North of this is Barking Park. From here coverage extends a mile eastward into open country. The hamlet of Upney is bottom centre, with its Isolation Hospital, Manor Farm is to the NE. The LTS railway crosses the map west-east but no stations are shown.

Tony Kirby provides an excellent history of the area, discussing its earlier days as a resort, and then how Purfleet Camp was established within weeks of the outbreak of World War 1.

Features include Ferryhill station, Mainsforth Colliery, Chilton Colliery, Little Chilton, Mainsforth Lime Works, etc. The introduction by Alan Godfrey explores the development of the area’s railways and collieries, and the growth of Ferryhill Station, while also looking at the medieval history of Little Chilton.
